Educate, Agitate, Organise
“The boss won’t listen when one guy squawks, but he better listen when the union talks!”
Having someone who can speak up for you and help you to maintain your rights in a disciplinary or grievance meeting is better than having no representation. But in a non-unionised workplace, employers will still get away with whatever they can. Who will stop them? The only way to stand up to unfair management practices, poor working conditions, poor pay and abuse is to act collectively.
Empower will help you to bring you and your colleagues together, become united in your workplace and begin to win the respect you deserve from your boss.
Educate!
Organising means bringing your colleagues together for a common cause, as one voice, as a union. Whatever problems you face at work, your colleagues are probably feeling the same way. But what are your rights? Your employer won’t tell you that they are shafting you, it is up to you and your colleagues to find out what you should expect and deserve from your employer (that you are not getting.) Empower will help you to look at your contract, your working conditions and your pay and identify just how much you are being short-changed.
No sick pay? Why the hell not?
Minimum wage? Why not more?
Oppressive conditions and discipline? Who says that is the way it should be?
Agitate!
So you’ve found out that your company is making plenty of money and the line that they cannot afford to pay sick pay is a lie? What can you do?
Talk to your colleagues!
If you are being treated unfairly, ask your colleagues how they feel about it. Did they even realise? Do they feel strongly about it? What would they be prepared to do about it?
You’ve started to form a union. You are uniting around a common grievance. And you’ve decided that enough is enough. But moaning won’t change anything. What can you do now?
Organise!
You’ve come to the hardest part. It is one thing to all feel the same and want to do ‘something’ but now you need to get organised. With Empower The Workers’ Union you will get all the help and support you need to build the union in your workplace.
